Catheris evokes a tragic episode in the history of the Republic of the Congo, which was a French colony from 1875-1960. The construction of the Congo-Ocean railway, crossing the tropical Congo Forest to reach the Atlantic coast, claimed the lives of thousands of Congolese workers.
