CATHERIS MONDOMBO

"Notre histoire" series
90 x 140 cm
Mixed media on salvaged tarpaulin
Ébalé Collection

In the Notre histoire series dedicated to the colonisation of the Congo, at a first glance this work seems to be the odd one out because of its apparently trivial subject. It is nothing of the sort. It still depicts the demand for rubber (with the success of cycling in Europe in the early 20th century, demand for rubber shot up), and, implicitly, the physical abuse endured by the Congolese people.

Some have called it the “Versailles of the Jungle”. The town and palaces of Gbadolite, located in northern DR Congo, rose from the middle of the jungle through President Mobutu’s will alone. He wanted to make his home village into his…
