Angalia

A contemporary African art gallery

Angalia is a gallery specialising in contemporary art from DR Congo (DRC). It is located 10-12 rue des Coutures Saint Gervais in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, a stone’s throw from the Picasso Museum.

All the works that we showcase have been bought directly from the artists starting in 2007, the year when the founders, Pierre Daubert and Karin Barlet, started to support our first artists. The gallery was formally created in September 2011.

Angalia is a Swahili word meaning “to look, to see and to observe”.

The place of African contemporary art

Contemporary artists from DR Congo

We solely showcase visual artists who live in and work in DR Congo, both established international artists, and young emerging artists.  Angalia offers them support, notably by travelling on a very regular basis to Kinshasa. Angalia’s local foothold has been strengthened since 2014 by a partnership with Texaf-Bilembo cultural centre, through which the work of the artists is regularly exhibited in Kinshasa.

Why the DRC?

Ébalé Fund: supporting the emergence of young artists

In 2019, Angalia promoted the creation of Ébalé, a fund aiming to support the emergence of young Congolese artists. Ébalé purchases the works of promising young artists at the start of their careers, and eventually sells the works on the international market. Angalia manages the fund.
