In this work depicting a Congolese solider employed as an “auxiliary” by the Belgian colonial administration, Catheris explicitly refers to the cruelty of the colonial power’s practices, as the colonial administration used to punish with mutilation local people who did not collect enough rubber or ivory on its behalf.
