Coming from a Kongo matriarchal lineage, Gosette’s series Please carry it! forms part of a personal quest exploring descent, heritage and transmission.

Drawing on family archives — notably a photograph of her grandmother — this work forges a symbolic link between the artist, her grandmother and the poses of the Phemba statuettes, emblematic figures of Kongo motherhood. It explores the artist’s place within her genealogy and re-enacts the gesture made by her ancestor in the original photograph.

The works in the series (Baka and Fika meaning ‘seize’ and ‘cover’ respectively) convey the gestural and mystical dimension of the maternal figure: she who carries, preserves and passes on this heritage.
