With The weight of history I and II, Gaël Maski reflects the complex issues surrounding colonial heritage. Here he depicts the statue of Stanley – still standing in Kinshasa – on the head of a women, who become the pedestal. The result, both dreamlike and full of symbolism, simultaneously calls into question the weight of colonial heritage, appropriation of the past, collective memory, and individual development in the post-colonial world.
