La main de l’homme (“The hand of man”) depicts a father and son who are obviously poor. Despite the child’s apparently nonchalant attitude, the plastic bag placed over his head emphasizes his difficult circumstances, which are causing him to suffocate. However, his father is wearing a Tchokwé mask, symbolising power and wealth, and he is trying to convey this strength to his son, whose hand he holds. He is conveying a mindset of survival and freedom.
