Like many other artists, JP Mika drew real inspiration from the studio portraits shot by African photographers such as Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keita and Jean Depara in the 1950s-1970s. My birthday is directly inspired by a Seydou Keïta photograph from the mid-1950s.
