Barack Obama (2009)

JP MIKA

Oil on canvas
70 x 104 cm
Private collection

The election of Barack Obama was a source of great pride in Africa, and also of often excessive enthusiasm. This attractive example of narrative figure painting, created shortly after the 2008 US elections, bears witness to this. Despite the stumbling blocks, Obama looks determined (his resolute expression is reinforced by the falcon’s steely gaze) to bring about the heralded change, and above all the change expected by Africans.
