Les grands hommes (Great Statesmen) is characteristic of the Congolese popular painters’ own narrative figure painting style, particularly that of Chéri Chérin, in whose studio JP Mika trained. With uprisings in the Arab world, the killing of Osama Bin Laden, and the post-election crisis in Côte d’Ivoire, the painting is an account of the times.
