PORTRAITS YA KONGO
Group show - 01.07 > 09.08.2023
The exhibition showcases a selection of portraits by 12 artists from DR Congo, two of whom are being shown for the first time in France.
The works differ from the current mainstream trend in contemporary African art in which portraiture primarily aims to demarginalize Black communities and affirm their identity. Instead, the Congolese artists have more of an individual and singular take on portraiture.
Ranging from major popular figures to political portraits, and including portraits depicting social or personal subjects, the exhibited works perpetuate a very old and prolific genre; a genre not exhausted by photography and that continues to fulfil some of its historic functions: celebration, tribute, remembrance, as well as caricature and the depiction of feelings.
