Colonized (2012)

STEVE BANDOMA

Lost Tribe series
Mixed media on paper
100 x 70 cm
White shadow box frame
Framed: 102 x 73 cm
Available

The flagship work from the "Lost Tribe" series, Colonized is a striking interpretation of the clash of civilisations which occurred when Europe took possession of Africa in the 19th century. The statuette depicted is the Congolese Nkisi Nkondi fetish figure, known to be scarily powerful, but beaten in this picture, and despite itself sporting the colours of the colonizers. The statuette is full of holes and gives us a glimpse of a new ruling power, which is also that of the consumer society, as heralded by the training shoe placed alongside.
