This work epitomises Freddy Tsimba’s approach: the artist uses objects that symbolise death to create not just life but also grace. Tsimba likes to remind us that machetes are first and foremost one of a small farmer’s basic tools, before being regarded as a deadly weapon in the collective imagination. Mama machettes, a nurturing mother, embodies the domination of life over death.
