The SAPE (dandy) movement, is an art, philosophy, even a religion…the Kitendi religion (meaning “fabric” in Lingala) that Amani delights here in comparing with another form of worship. The work is inspired by the ceremony held regularly by the sapeurs in tribute to Stervos Niarcos, the high priest of the Congolese SAPE movement, on the anniversary of his death.
