Three foundering Popes can be seen in this painting, with their faces hidden by despair or shame, however, the young boy on the left is depicted most intensely. By pointing to him, the Pope seems to be acknowledging the Catholic Church’s responsibility in numerous child abuse scandals which are shaking the institution.
