We are delighted to announce that the gallery is now representing Théo Mwamba. An enthusiast of art as testimony, with a strong social dimension, Théo Mwamba is modernising Congolese popular art with an innovative take on his country’s social fabric and history.
Having just graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, Théo did not wait until the end of his studies to experiment with different pictorial techniques. In particular, his research has led him to develop a technique of painting on printed canvas, using historical archives or his own photographs. He uses this approach in the “Histoire na kati ya poso” series, which focuses on the Congo’s colonial past using archive images.
His work is rooted in the social and cultural life of his country, as illustrated by the themes of his other series: child labour, the Congolese music scene and night work. First exhibited in Europe in the group show “CONGO – Passé composé” presented by the gallery in the spring, he will be presenting his first solo show in February 2024 in Kinshasa, at the Texaf-Bilembo cultural space.
