STEVE BANDOMA - Pomme de discorde

Solo show - 14.05 > 20.06.2026

An advocate of African self-assertion, Steve Bandoma (born in 1981 in DR Congo) uses his works to denounce a form of globalisation that is jeopardising the continent’s culture. His work revolves around chaos, hybridity and deconstruction, yet it is not devoid of harmony.

The exhibition showcases Steve Bandoma’s three artistic worlds: power, with its grotesque incarnations; hybridity, with subjects who have assimilated due to being willing victims of the dominant culture, and the colonialism/decolonisation pairing.

Steve Bandoma has developed his technique since the start of his career in 2008: he used ink and collage on paper at the beginning, and then dropped collages in 2015, before finally switching to ink and acrylics on canvas in 2025. The works on show cover all three periods.

The exhibition’s title is borrowed from one of the artworks on display. A chaotic scene is depicted in which a Christ, who could actually be a devil, holds an Israeli flag in one hand, while the other is equipped with a boxing glove. It is a snapshot of our contemporary world. The everlasting conflict between humankind leads to a rage, with some fighting for survival, while others see an opportunity to seize control. It is a quintessentially Congolese subject.
