Almost 30 years ago, student Francis Mampuya left the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts to flee an academic philosophy that was suffocating him. With a few friends, he created a small movement called “Librism”. The movement disbanded shortly afterwards, but it unleashed abstraction and expressionism, and opened the way to unknown or very little used artistic practices in the Congo at the time.
Today, aged 57, Mampuya has become an established figure in Congolese painting, and remains driven by a sense of revolt. His works denounce injustice, repression and the denial of democracy.
We are delighted to be offering an overview of his immense artistic output. The exhibition displays 13 works produced over the 2005-2024 period.
