In Kinshasa, artists who belong to the popular painting movement have been depicting humanised animals for a long time. In this painting, Amani Bodo takes it one step further by creating a blend of human and animal. This simian sapeur (dandy) is showing off, and is in his element as an ape-man. In this way, Bodo ridicules the idiocy displayed by racists in some European football grounds, who contrive to make monkey noises to upset footballers of African origin. Amani Bodo uses these black ape-men depicted in his inspired surrealist style to demonstrate to us that Africans do not take it seriously.
